Chapter 12 - CARLO AFTER THE FIRE

The video date was undeniable.
Three days after the explosion.
Carlo Caldero entered the clinic basement with burns along one side of his face.
Alive.
Weak.
Furious.
Evelyn had been told Carlo died at the warehouse.
The video had no sound, but Mara had captioned portions later.
Carlo accused Vito of the bombing.
Vito denied it.
Arthur Bell demanded Carlo sign over emergency authority.
Carlo refused.
Then Arden injected him.
Carlo collapsed.
Mara stepped toward him.
Marcus blocked her.
"You were there."
"I thought Arden was sedating him."
"What happened next?"
"They moved Carlo."
"Where?"
"Saint Vincent's private hospice."
He lived eleven more days.
"You knew my father was alive for eleven days."
"Yes."
"Did he ask for me?"
"Every day."
Silence crushed the room.
Nora did not touch him.
Evelyn signed:
I did not know.
Vincent nodded. He knew.
That mattered.
Mara tried to leave with copies.
The camera fell sideways.
No clear image of what happened.
But Mara's scream was captured.
Then darkness.
Lucia signed that she later found Mara's body in an unmarked grave through a sympathetic groundskeeper.
She had never reported it because she believed the Calderos controlled local police.
Ortiz now had enough to excavate the site.
Then Carlo appeared in another clip from hospice.
The captions read:
Vincent, if you ever see this, I was your father because I chose to be. Vito will tell you blood makes him more entitled to you. It does not.
Protect your mother by listening to her, not by owning her life.
The family business is not worth one more grave.
Outside, sirens approached.
"I didn't call local units."
"Vito did."
May you like
Cars surrounded the mansion.
And a police loudspeaker ordered Vincent Caldero to come outside with his hands visible.
