Chapter 9 - THE DOCTOR

Philip Arden was arrested before sunrise.
He denied everything.
Then Nora signed a question to Evelyn through a live video clip recovered from the blue house.
Did he understand your signing?
Yes.
Ortiz placed the translation in front of Arden.
For twenty years he had hidden behind the claim that Evelyn's gestures were meaningless.
One waitress destroyed that shield in ten seconds.
Arden asked for counsel.
His office search uncovered original rehabilitation notes from Mara Velez.
Patient demonstrates intact cognition.
Rapid ASL acquisition.
Strong written-language comprehension.
No basis for incompetency.
The report had never entered Evelyn's official chart.
A second file contained payment records.
Arthur Bell paid Arden monthly.
Vito reimbursed Bell through Raven Security.
"I carried some of those envelopes."
"You never asked?"
"I learned early that questions got people hurt."
Nora said quietly, "So did silence."
Then agents found a sealed vial in Arden's safe.
The medication scheduled for Evelyn's "permanent sedation."
Not legal euthanasia.
Not treatment.
Enough to keep an older woman heavily sedated for months.
Maybe permanently disabled.
Vito was going to make the lie true.
Vincent walked out before anger made him reckless.
"I sat beside her every Sunday."
"I thought she was gone."
"She wasn't."
"I know that now."
"No."
Nora's voice stayed calm.
"You know she was there. That's different from knowing her."
That hurt.
It was supposed to.
Arthur Bell had disappeared.
The family attorney.
The man who received Evelyn's letters.
His office safe was open.
One thing missing.
Evelyn's original trust.
Sarah Keene checked the county record.
Without the original, Bell could claim Evelyn had transferred broad authority years ago.
"To whom?"
"To you."
Vincent went still.
A forged trust amendment made Vincent the legal beneficiary of twenty years of stolen income.
If exposed without context, it would look as if he had profited knowingly from his mother's captivity.
Then Ortiz's phone rang.
May you like
Arthur Bell had just entered federal court asking for protective custody.
And he said Vincent Caldero ordered everything.
