Chapter 15 - THE MAN WITH THE MATCH

Arthur Bell was arrested at a private airfield.
He denied setting the bomb.
Then Ortiz showed him Marcus's recorded statement.
He claimed Vito ordered it.
He only arranged access.
Marcus told a different version.
Bell planted the device in a utility room.
Vito told him where.
The timer was supposed to detonate after Evelyn arrived and after Carlo left.
Carlo discovered the plan and went back for her.
The timer malfunctioned.
Carlo was caught inside.
Bell escaped through a service corridor.
Twenty years of family history began with one lawyer deciding obedience was safer than conscience.
Bell asked for a deal.
Again.
This time he offered the location of Mara's grave and Carlo's burial site.
Excavation teams found two sets of remains.
DNA confirmed Mara Velez.
The second was Carlo Caldero.
Vincent stood at the edge of the site with Evelyn.
He signed:
I am sorry I did not hear you.
Evelyn corrected his handshape.
Even grief did not stop a mother from fixing bad grammar.
She signed back:
You could not hear.
Then:
You could have listened.
No defense.
The distinction would follow him forever.
Then Ortiz found one more ledger in Bell's safe-deposit box.
Not Caldero money.
Political money.
Judges.
Port officials.
Police officers.
Union intermediaries.
Some payments belonged to Vito's network.
Some belonged to Vincent's legitimate companies under contracts he never reviewed closely.
"Did I finance this?"
"Your companies did."
"Did I authorize it?"
"Some signatures are yours."
Again.
Not criminal intent automatically.
Not innocence either.
Vincent made a decision.
"Give everything to Ortiz."
"That could destroy us."
"Us?"
"My father died trying to stop the family business from becoming another grave."
He handed over the ledger.
"Then it stops."
That night, Vito sent one final message.
A photograph of Bell's old lakeside house.
Under it:
COME HEAR THE TRUTH FROM YOUR REAL FATHER.
Vincent deleted it.
Evelyn stopped him and signed:
No.

Save it.
Evidence.
