Chapter 1 - HE HIT ME AGAIN

My daughter called me on Easter Sunday and whispered five words no father should ever hear.

“Dad... he hit me again.”

Everything in my kitchen stopped.

“Emily, where are you?”

A shaky breath.

“His house.”

Michael Harrington’s estate.

Twenty-five minutes away.

“What room?”

“The downstairs study.”

“Are you alone?”

“No.”

Her voice dropped lower.

“There are people everywhere.”

Then something crashed.

Emily gasped.

A man shouted, “Who are you calling?”

The phone hit the floor.

“Emily!”

Nothing.

I was already moving.

I climbed the marble steps.

Victoria Harrington blocked the door.

Michael’s mother wore diamonds like armor.

“Arthur Collins,” she said. “Still showing up where you don’t belong?”

“Where is my daughter?”

“Resting.”

“Move.”

She pushed me.

Hard.

My foot slid on the marble.

Anger is loud.

Control is quiet.

The front door opened.

The room went silent.

Then I saw Emily.

My daughter was lying beside a white couch, curled around her ribs.

Michael stood above her, adjusting his cufflinks.

“Relax, Arthur,” he said. “She fell.”

I looked at Emily.

Then at him.

“She fell?”

Michael poured himself bourbon.

“Exactly.”

Under the couch, Emily’s phone was still recording. Through the glass doors, Town Police Chief Daniel Brooks stood outside eating barbecue. Michael followed my eyes and smiled. “Go ahead. Call the police. Let’s see who they believe.”

I knelt beside Emily.

She flinched before she recognized me.

That hurt more than anything Michael could have said.

“Dad,” she whispered. “Don’t let him make me stay.”

“I won’t.”

I carried her to my truck.

Under the dashboard was a locked metal case I had not opened in fifteen years.

Inside were a secure phone, an old federal contact card, and three numbers: evidence preservation, victim support, federal referral.

I dialed the first number.

A voice answered.

“Identify.”

“Arthur Collins. Retired. Verification seven-three-Black.”

A pause.

Then: “What do you require?”

“All three.”

Behind me, Michael stepped outside holding legal papers.

“Emily is unstable,” he called. “Everyone here will confirm it.”

The voice on the phone asked, “Is there active evidence?”

I looked at Emily’s phone.

Still recording.

“Yes.”

Another pause.

“Preserve everything. Do not confront local law enforcement.”

Michael smiled.

Then the voice said:

“And Arthur? Chief Brooks is already on our radar.”
