Chapter 14 - CLEARWATER CABIN

We did not chase Michael.

That mattered.

State police and federal agents handled the cabin.

Agents found Michael’s SUV near Clearwater’s private cabin.

The cabin was empty.

But inside were boxes of records.

Not just Emily’s.

Other women.

Other families.

Treatment plans.

Guardianship drafts.

Asset summaries.

Divorce exposure estimates.

A business model disguised as care.

Michael had taken the boxes from somewhere before disappearing.

One folder had Claire’s name.

Inside were photographs of Claire entering Samuel Price’s office thirteen years earlier.

Copies of land maps.

Trust values.

A memo:

SUBJECT RESISTS SALE.

I felt sick.

Victoria had been monitoring my wife.

Then the final page:

ALTERNATE PATH: FUTURE BENEFICIARY.

Emily.

She had been six years old.

The Harringtons had marked a child as a future way into an asset.

Then Laura called.

Michael had been found.

Not at the cabin.

At a private airstrip forty miles away.

He was carrying cash, two passports, and a laptop.

He did not resist.

His first question after arrest:

“Did Emily sign anything?”

Then Laura added:

“There’s something on the laptop you both need to know.”

Michael had drafted a settlement agreement.

Emily would withdraw all accusations.

Transfer management of the trust.

Enter Clearwater voluntarily.

In exchange, Michael would not seek criminal charges against me for “assault.”

At the bottom was a signature block.

EMILY HARRINGTON.

May you like

Already signed.

Forged.
