Chapter 15 - THE SIGNATURE EXPERT

The same forensic document examiner compared three signatures.
Claire’s forged trust amendment.
Emily’s forged settlement.
A forged medical authorization.
All showed similar tracing habits.
Same pen pressure.
Same hesitation at curves.
Likely same hand.
“Michael?” I asked.
The examiner shook her head.
“Not enough evidence to identify a writer.”
Then investigators searched Victoria’s office.
They found tracing sheets.
Claire’s signature.
Emily’s signature.
Mine.
Dozens of practice attempts.
Victoria Harrington had spent years learning how our family signed our names.
She was arrested on fraud and conspiracy charges.
At arraignment, she wore navy and pearls.
Emily did not attend.
She went to therapy instead.
The trust court suspended Victoria’s authority immediately.
An independent fiduciary took control until Emily’s birthday.
Then the judge asked Emily a simple question.
“What do you want to happen when you turn thirty-two?”
Emily answered:
“I want control transferred to me as my mother intended.”
The judge nodded.
Then Emily added:
“And I want Clearwater barred from receiving one dollar from this trust.”
That became part of the order.
Two days later, Chief Brooks resigned.
One day after that, he was charged in the state case with evidence tampering and obstruction-related offenses.
Federal public-contract charges remained under investigation.
He released a statement saying he had only tried to “keep peace between prominent local families.”
I read it twice.
Peace.
Another respectable word hiding something ugly.
Then Brooks requested a proffer meeting with prosecutors.
He wanted to cooperate.
His information concerned Michael.
Victoria.
Clearwater.
And Claire.
When Rachel told me, I went cold.
“What about Claire?”
Brooks claimed he knew who created the forged amendment thirteen years ago.
Victoria.
No surprise.
But he also said someone inside Claire’s own legal circle gave Victoria the signature samples.
Samuel Price’s office.
Someone had betrayed Claire.
Price had one employee at the time.
May you like
His junior associate.
A man named Michael Harrington.
