Chapter 5 - EMILY’S PLAN

“That house is not safe.”

“I know.”

“Michael hurt you this morning.”

“I know.”

“You are not going back.”

She looked at me with a steadiness I had not seen in years.

“You just promised nobody would take my choice away.”

The sentence stopped me.

Leah intervened.

Rachel obtained an emergency preservation order, and state police—not the town department—agreed to accompany Emily.

By evening, Michael’s estate was no longer full of Easter guests.

Michael’s attorney met us outside.

Michael stood behind him.

His face was calm.

Too calm.

We entered with two state troopers and a court officer.

Emily walked upstairs.

Not to the bedroom.

To the nursery.

There were no children.

Michael had insisted they “prepare” one after the wedding.

Emily opened an empty dresser.

Removed the bottom drawer.

Under it was a thin external drive taped to the wood.

Michael’s face changed. “That contains company records.” Emily held up the drive. “You put company records on my private backup drive?” He realized too late what he had admitted.

Then Victoria stepped forward.

“That drive was stolen.”

Emily turned.

“From where?”

Victoria stopped.

Because there was no safe answer.

If it was stolen from Michael, they admitted the files existed.

If it belonged to Emily, they lost their claim.

The state trooper sealed it.

As we left, Emily paused beside the downstairs study.

The white carpet had been cleaned.

Too quickly.

But beneath the couch, she found one small thing the cleaners missed.

Then she looked at Michael.

“You cleaned the blood.”

He smiled.

“There was no blood.”

May you like

Emily’s face went still.

She had never mentioned blood.
