Chapter 18 - THE EASTER WITNESSES

The Easter guests became witnesses.

Messages from Victoria before the party.

Please remain calm if Emily becomes emotional. Michael has arranged support.

One guest, Senator Wallace’s wife, handed over a message from Michael:

Arthur may cause a scene. Do not intervene.

Another guest had video of Victoria removing Claire’s locket from a table and passing it to Michael.

Another caught Brooks entering the study.

Another captured Emily saying:

“Give me my phone.”

Michael answered:

“Not until you calm down.”

The witnesses had pieces. Together they made a wall.

Michael eventually pleaded guilty to several financial and coercive-control-related offenses where applicable under the charged statutes, along with assault and fraud counts negotiated by prosecutors.

Victoria pleaded guilty to forgery and conspiracy-related charges.

Keller lost his medical license while his criminal case proceeded.

Brooks was convicted in state court on evidence and official-misconduct charges; federal contract matters continued separately.

Clearwater shut down after regulators suspended its license.

No single raid fixed everything. It took months of paper, testimony, forensics, and people finally telling the truth.

Emily finalized her divorce.

“I loved you.”

Emily’s face did not change.

“I believe you loved having me.”

He flinched.

She continued.

“That is not the same thing.”

The judge signed the decree.

Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.

Emily walked past them.

She got into my truck.

Then she looked at me.

“Ham?”

“What?”

“It’s Easter food. I never ate any.”

I laughed for the first time in what felt like a year.

“Ham it is.”

Then she said something quieter.

“Dad?”

“Yeah?”

“Next Easter, can we not make it a trauma anniversary?”

May you like

I nodded.

“We can make it whatever you want.”
