Chapter 16 - MICHAEL KNEW MY WIFE

Michael had worked briefly for Samuel Price at twenty-seven. I had seen him once or twice carrying files through the office. I had forgotten him. He had not forgotten us.

Michael had access to Claire’s trust file.

Her signatures.

Her land records.

Her concerns about Victoria.

Price fired him after discovering he copied client documents without authorization.

Price never told us.

“He said it was handled internally,” Rachel explained.

I called him.

He sounded devastated.

“I should have reported it.”

“Yes.”

“I thought he was ambitious, not criminal.”

“You protected your firm.”

Silence.

Then: “Yes.”

That word carried thirteen years.

Not murder.

Not a secret assassination.

Something more ordinary.

Professional cowardice.

A quiet choice that made later harm easier.

Brooks told prosecutors Victoria recruited Michael after he left Price’s firm.

Mother and son began building leverage around the trust.

For years, nothing happened because Claire died and the trust stayed protected.

Then Emily became an adult.

Victoria kept watching.

Michael met her at the fundraiser.

Emily read the summary once.

Then said, “I need to know something.”

“What?”

“Did he ever choose me after he started using me?”

I finally said:

“Maybe.”

Emily looked at me.

“That’s worse.”

“I know.”

Michael requested to speak with Emily through attorneys.

She refused.

He sent a letter.

She returned it unopened.

Then Emily’s birthday arrived.

Thirty-two.

At 9:00 a.m., the trust transferred to her direct control.

At 9:07, she made her first decision.

She froze every payment to Harrington-connected entities.

At 9:12, Clearwater called.

At 9:14, Civic Shield called.

At 9:20, a bank officer called Rachel.

Someone had tried to move two million dollars from the trust at 8:53.

Seven minutes before Emily took control.

The transfer request carried Victoria’s authorization.

And Chief Brooks’ electronic approval.
