Chapter 11 - The Traitor Who Warned Her

"Play it again," Giulietta said.

Nico replayed the clip.

Vittorio handed Warren the key.

Took one step back.

Help her.

"Could be nothing."

"He knew exactly where the camera was."

"Or he's playing both sides."

"That too."

Giulietta's phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number.

OLD CHAPEL. 3 PM. COME WITH MARCO ONLY IF YOU WANT ELENA ALIVE.

Marco read over her shoulder.

"No."

"We're going."

"Absolutely not."

"It says bring you."

"Which means they know I'm the one most likely to object."

"Then object in the car."

The old chapel sat behind the Marconi estate, unused since her grandmother's funeral. Rain had started by the time they arrived.

Alone.

Her uncle looked ten years older than he had that morning.

"Where is Elena?"

"Safe for the next hour."

The sound cracked across the empty courtyard.

"I deserved that."

"You kidnapped my attorney."

"I moved her before Warren's men did."

"You escorted her into his clinic."

"Because his people were watching. She left through the loading dock twenty minutes later."

Giulietta stared at him.

"Prove it."

A live video showed Elena sitting in a small apartment, bruised but awake.

"Giulietta," Elena said into the camera. "I'm all right. Don't trust the clinic records. Vittorio got me out."

Giulietta's anger did not disappear.

"You gave Warren the key."

"A key he already had copied. I needed him to believe I was still useful."

"You let Preston lock me in."

"I told your security to be outside that door. I mouthed the warning to the camera because I knew Elena would eventually recover the footage."

"Why not tell me the truth?"

"Because Warren has had a man inside your inner circle for four years. I didn't know who."

Marco went still.

"Now I do."

Giulietta followed his gaze.

"Who?"

May you like

Vittorio's answer was barely a whisper.

"Nico."
