Chapter 17 - The Uncle's Truth

Vittorio did not run.

He came to Bellflower House when Giulietta called.

Detectives searched him before letting him inside.

"Antonio actually kept it."

Giulietta's anger returned.

"You were here three weeks ago."

"Yes."

"You told me you didn't know where Bellflower was."

"I lied."

"At least we're making progress."

Giulietta held up the caretaker log.

"Why?"

"Because Warren contacted me six months ago. He said he knew Antonio had collected evidence. He offered to erase debts I had hidden from the family if I helped him find it."

"So you did."

"I searched. I found the building. But I did not find the panel."

"Then why help with the wedding plan?"

"Because after I failed, Warren threatened my sons. Not with violence. With prison. He had records of things they had done for the company before you took over."

Giulietta's jaw tightened.

"Everybody has a reason. Rafael. Nico. You."

"Reasons aren't excuses."

Vittorio looked directly at her.

"I helped him. I deserve whatever comes next. But I also spent the last month feeding Elena pieces of his plan. That's why she made the recording. That's why your security was outside the bridal suite."

Elena folded her arms.

"He's telling the truth about that part."

Giulietta looked between them.

"And my father?"

"Warren came to the house that night. I let him in."

The room became still.

"Did you know he was going to touch Dad's medication?"

"No. I swear to you. They argued. Warren left. Antonio looked fine. Twenty minutes later, he collapsed."

"Then how was the medication altered?"

"I have asked myself that every day since."

A detective opened one of the Bellflower evidence envelopes.

Attached to it was a security still from a drugstore.

The customer purchasing a replacement bottle was visible in profile.
