Chapter 13 - Something Blue

The wedding gown was still hanging in the bridal suite.
No one had touched it.
Giulietta locked eyes with Marco.
"Search the seams."
Hem. Waist. Bodice. Lining.
Then Giulietta remembered the tradition her father had mocked every time a cousin married.
He had sent a gift to the hotel three days before the wedding.
She had tucked it into the inside pocket of the gown.
Empty.
"No."
Nothing.
"Who handled the dress?"
"Wedding planner. Two assistants. My aunt. Tove from alterations."
"And Preston?"
Giulietta thought of the morning.
He had brought the golf club inside a garment bag.
Because he needed an excuse to carry a second bag out.
"The attack was a distraction," she said.
"He was searching the dress."
Giulietta called Nico.
"Did Preston have a blue handkerchief?"
"I don't know."
"Think."
"He had something folded in his pocket at the warehouse. Blue fabric. I thought it was a pocket square."
"Pier Nine."
Marco grabbed her arm.
"We do this legally. We have prosecutors involved now."
"Call them."
"And wait."
"No. Call them while we move."
Rain hammered the river when they arrived.
Giulietta saw Preston through the warehouse windows.
He stood beside a steel desk with Warren and Rafael.
On the desk lay the blue handkerchief.
Preston unfolded it.
Not a certificate.
A safe-deposit key.
Warren snatched it up.
Straight at Giulietta.
Marco pulled her down behind a concrete barrier.
Instead, Rafael raised his hand inside the warehouse and pointed at Warren.

Then he shouted one word through the glass.
"RUN!"
