Chapter 16 - The Name on the Deed

"I own what?" Giulietta asked.

Elena opened the sealed envelope.

Inside was a deed.

Not to a company.

Bellflower House.

Giulietta remembered it immediately.

A flower shop occupied the ground floor. Upstairs had been empty offices.

"It was hers," Giulietta whispered.

Elena nodded.

"Your mother bought the building before she married your father. He transferred it back into your name when you turned twenty-one."

"Why put corporate evidence in a flower shop?"

Giulietta understood.

"Because nobody in this family looks twice at something sentimental."

Bellflower House had been closed for years.

The old blue awning sagged over the sidewalk.

Giulietta walked to the back office.

It was still there.

Nothing.

Giulietta knelt.

The panel lifted.

Elena exhaled.

Enough for investigators to spend months unraveling.

A recent date was stamped across the front.

Someone had accessed Bellflower House three weeks earlier.

"Dad's been dead for years," she said.

Elena read the access log.

"Warren didn't know where this place was until recently."

"Then somebody told him."

Giulietta turned the page.

A visitor had signed in under a false name.

But the caretaker had added the license plate.

Giulietta knew the car.

It belonged to Vittorio.
