Chapter 18 - Rafael's Confession

Rafael was still at the hospital when detectives arrived.

He did not ask for a lawyer.

That scared Giulietta more than denial would have.

"I wondered how long it would take," he said.

Giulietta remained by the door.

"Tell me."

"Warren gave me a bottle. Same prescription. Same label. He told me your father had asked him to pick it up because his usual pharmacy was out."

"And you believed him?"

"I wanted to."

"You replaced Dad's medication."

"Yes."

Her hands went cold.

"I did not know it was altered. I put it in the cabinet. Later, when Antonio died, I suspected. Warren found me before I could say anything. He showed me the pharmacy footage and said if I talked, I would be the one charged."

"So you stayed quiet for years."

"Yes."

"Then helped him come after me."

Rafael looked ashamed.

"Yes."

Instead she asked, "Why warn me at the pier?"

"Because when Preston described what happened in the bridal suite, I realized Warren was doing the same thing again. Put the dangerous part in someone else's hands. Make fear do the rest."

"Did Warren ever admit he altered Antonio Marconi's medication?"

Rafael nodded slowly.

"Once. Two years ago. He was drunk. He said Antonio should've taken the deal instead of the pills."

There it was.

But a path to proof.

Marco.

"Warren surfaced," he said.

"Where?"

"Marconi Tower."

"Why would he go there?"

"Board meeting. He has three directors with him and claims the company is in crisis. He's trying to force an emergency vote before the banks close."

"On what authority?"

"The forged signature."

Giulietta looked at the hospital clock.

The wedding should have happened hours ago.

Instead, Warren was trying to marry himself to her company without her.

She picked up her coat.

"Then let's attend the reception."
