Chapter 15 - The Groom Runs
Preston made it three blocks.
He came out from beneath the train platform with his tuxedo shirt open at the collar and rain running down his face.
Two detectives met him at the corner.
Marco was behind him.
He saw her.
"This is your fault!"
Giulietta stepped out.
"That's going to be a difficult argument for your lawyer."
"You destroyed everything."
"I took off a ring. You people did the rest yourselves."
Preston was arrested on assault, coercion, and conspiracy-related charges pending further investigation. Warren was still missing.
The bank key was with him.
At First Federal, Giulietta met Elena and two prosecutors just before closing.
Elena's face was bruised along the jaw, but her voice was steady.
"Your father used your mother's name: Giulietta Rossi. Box 417."
The branch manager led them downstairs.
The duplicate key process took twenty minutes and two signatures.
When the box finally opened, Giulietta expected stock certificates.
Inside lay a sealed envelope, an old voice recorder, and one photograph.
The photograph showed Antonio Marconi shaking hands with Warren Hale at Pier Nine.
Behind them stood Vittorio, Rafael, and a much younger Preston.
IF THEY COME FOR BELLFLOWER, PLAY THE TAPE FIRST.
Elena pressed the recorder button.
Antonio's voice filled the small vault room.
"Giulietta, if you hear this, then I failed to end something before it reached you. I'm sorry."
She had not heard his voice in almost three years.
"Bellflower is not property. It is leverage. Years ago, Warren Hale used our terminals to hide losses and move money between companies without board approval. I discovered it. Instead of exposing him immediately, I made the worst mistake of my life. I used what I knew to force him out of our ports quietly."
Elena looked at Giulietta.
Antonio continued.
"That made him afraid. Fear makes men like Warren patient."
"If I die unexpectedly, assume he stopped being patient."

Then came the final sentence.
"The proof is not in this box. The proof is inside Bellflower itself, and Giulietta already owns it."
