Chapter 10 - My Mother’s Part

My mother died before Evelyn disappeared.

That was what I had believed.

I was wrong about the timeline.

The video was recorded two years before our wedding.

Same plan being discussed in advance.

Eleanor Mercer knew Victor feared Evelyn’s trust rights.

She knew he wanted to prevent the marriage if Evelyn discovered the financial records.

She did not know he would imprison her.

At least, nothing proved that.

But she helped build the emotional plan.

If the wedding failed, make Daniel believe Evelyn left because she did not love him.

Because my mother believed protecting me from scandal was more important than telling me the truth.

Evelyn watched the video once.

Then said:

“Your family planned my heartbreak like a press strategy.”

She brought police a letter our mother wrote shortly before she died.

I agreed to delay the trust transfer. I did not agree to destroy that girl. If she finds out, tell Daniel. Do not lie to him.

My mother had changed her mind.

People wanted clean roles.

Our family kept refusing to stay simple.

My father had committed the central crime.

My mother helped create the lie, then tried to stop it.

Claire helped fake the disappearance, then kept Evelyn alive, then kept her trapped.

Graham followed orders, then expanded the cover-up to save himself.

I had spent three years accepting explanations because the alternative was too painful.

I asked Detective Brooks:

“Could I have found her?”

She answered carefully.

“Maybe.”

Then Evelyn said:

“Daniel.”

“I screamed the first night.”

“Could anyone hear you?”

“I heard music from the ballroom.”

Victor had told guests the bride disappeared.

The band kept playing while police searched outside.

Evelyn had been thirty feet beneath us.

Then she added:

“I heard you calling my name.”

I stopped breathing.

“So close?”

May you like

She nodded.

“And then your father came downstairs and told me you had stopped looking.”
