Chapter 17 - Victor’s Last Insurance

The microfilm contained a signed confession.
Not moral.
Strategic.
Victor had written it two years after Evelyn disappeared.
If this document is being read, Graham Pike has failed to protect the family’s interests.
Even in confession, my father blamed someone else.
He admitted creating Mercer Strategic Holdings in my name.
Admitted directing transfers from the foundation.
Admitted forcing Evelyn to sign the waiver.
Then one sentence:
My daughter Claire did not design the financial scheme. Her signatures were obtained through pressure and false representations.
Claire had not known the full scope at first.
Then came the line that mattered emotionally.
She later learned enough to stop me and chose not to.
My father understood her exactly.
Maybe because he trained her.
Victor’s confession was meant as insurance against Graham.
If Graham ever betrayed him, Victor could release the statement and control the narrative from the grave.
Detective Brooks called it “a dead man still negotiating.”
The confession strengthened the criminal cases.
It also cleared my name from direct involvement in the theft.
Reporters treated that as a victory.
My name had still been useful to my father because he knew I was not paying attention to the right things.
Evelyn and I began meeting twice a week.
No pressure to call it dating.
Some days she could talk about the wedding.
Some days she could not.
One afternoon she asked:
“Did you ever hate me?”
“For leaving?”
“Yes.”
“I hated you for about four months.”
“Good.”
“Good?”
“It means you weren’t frozen.”
Then I asked:
“Did you hate me?”
“Yes.”
“For not finding you?”
“For being upstairs.”
“I know it wasn’t rational.”
“It didn’t need to be.”
She reached across the table.
This time she held my hand longer.
Claire’s plea agreement was ready.
Before signing, she wanted to disclose one final location.
A locked room beneath the estate chapel.
Victor called it the archive.
Evelyn whispered:
“There’s another room?”
May you like
Brooks answered:
“Apparently, this house has been lying longer than any of you.”
