Chapter 6 - The Runaway Bride

For three years, everyone believed there were two possibilities.
Evelyn ran away.
Or someone took her after she left Mercer House.
Both were lies built by my own family.
Claire told police she saw Evelyn leave the bridal suite upset.
Graham Pike produced security footage of a woman in Evelyn’s wedding coat exiting through the rear garden.
A driver claimed he took her to the train station.
Her purse was found in a restroom there.
Her phone was discovered near the tracks two days later.
I had watched that footage a hundred times.
Now Detective Brooks showed me the original files recovered from Victor’s archive.
The woman in the coat was Claire.
She wore Evelyn’s veil under a hat to match the height and shape.
I stared at the screen.
Claire walked exactly like herself.
Because I had been looking for Evelyn.
Brooks said:
“Grief makes patterns look like answers.”
The driver was a Mercer employee.
He admitted years later that Graham paid him to lie.
Nobody had connected it.
The investigation went cold.
Then Claire entered the interview room across the hall.
She had asked to speak with me.
Brooks said:
“You may want to hear her eventually.”
“Not today.”
Then she handed me a transcript from Claire’s first interview.
CLAIRE: My father told me Evelyn needed time.
DETECTIVE: Did you believe him?
CLAIRE: For one night.
DETECTIVE: And after that?
CLAIRE: After that I knew she was below the house.
“One night?”
Claire discovered Evelyn was still there the morning after the wedding.
He had records showing Claire signed the foundation transfers.
He told her he could make her the sole architect of the fraud.
He also threatened to cut her off from her seven-year-old son, Noah, by using the family attorneys to fund her ex-husband’s custody case.
Then Evelyn said:
“She still had choices.”
She was not defending Claire.
“She brought me food. Medicine. Books. Sometimes newspapers.”
I whispered:
“And never freedom.”
“Never freedom.”
Then Detective Brooks turned another page.
Claire had admitted something else.
The wedding-day documents were not the only evidence she hid.

She had kept one original ledger outside Mercer House.
And Victor never found it.
