Chapter 12 - We Were Married

Evelyn laughed first.
Not because it was funny.
Because reality had become ridiculous.
“We’re married?”
“The license was validly executed and filed.”
For three years, I thought our marriage never happened.
For three years, the law said otherwise.
Evelyn looked overwhelmed.
I said quickly:
“You don’t owe me anything because of a form.”
“Thank you.”
That was the right answer.
Rebecca explained that the marriage activated the Carter voting trust immediately.
Victor had spent three years exercising authority he no longer legally possessed.
Every foundation board action involving the Carter block could be challenged.
Possibly millions returned.
It also explained why Evelyn could never simply be released after signing the fake waiver.
If she appeared publicly, she could contest it.
Claire knew that eventually.
I asked Claire through her lawyer:
“When did you learn the waiver was fake?”
“Year two.”
A full year before our father died.
A full year in which Claire knew Evelyn still had legal power.
Still she stayed silent.
Claire wrote me a letter instead of asking for another meeting.
Evelyn began trauma therapy.
She moved into a private recovery residence instead of coming home with me.
Home was not neutral for her.
Mercer House certainly was not.
Police sealed the bridal suite and underground passages as evidence.
Rosa, the maid who found the veil, became a witness.
She told detectives something else.
Two months before the discovery, she had heard tapping beneath the bridal suite.
She told the estate manager.
He said old pipes made noise.
The manager was Graham’s cousin.
Detective Brooks searched his phone.
A message from Graham:
IF STAFF HEAR ANYTHING, BLAME THE HEATING SYSTEM.
Sent eight months earlier.
Victor had been dead two months when Graham sent it.
The cover-up had continued without him.
Then Brooks found the message that finally explained why Claire never opened the gate after Victor died.
Graham to Claire:
YOU FREE HER, I SEND DANIEL THE VIDEO OF YOU PUTTING HER BELOW.
Claire replied:
HE’LL NEVER FORGIVE ME.
May you like
Graham:
EXACTLY.
