Chapter 4 - My Name on the Money

I stood so fast the chair scraped across the hospital floor.

“No.”

Evelyn did not react.

“I never took foundation money.”

“I know that now.”

“Now?”

“For a long time, I didn’t.”

She explained that the wedding-day documents showed a consulting company called D. Mercer Strategic Holdings receiving millions over seven years.

My address listed on the original registration.

My digital signature on several approvals.

I had never heard of the company.

“Dad used my identity.”

“Yes.”

“And Claire?”

“She approved three transfers as a junior trustee.”

Claire had been twenty-eight then.

Old enough to know better.

Young enough to be controlled by our father.

Neither erased the other.

On our wedding day she confronted Claire in the bridal suite.

“She told me not to marry you until she fixed it.”

“What did you say?”

“I told her I was marrying you, not your father.”

Evelyn had still believed in me.

He told Evelyn the documents were old accounting drafts.

She did not believe him.

Then he told her if she walked downstairs and married me, the trust transfer would trigger an independent audit.

“That was good,” I said.

“For the foundation.”

“For your father, it meant everything he had hidden could be exposed.”

Victor ordered Claire to leave.

Evelyn moved toward the door.

Then the floor panel opened.

“The passage?” I asked.

“Yes.”

Victor knew Mercer House better than any of us.

He told Evelyn there was a private exit through the old servants’ corridor.

He said reporters had arrived and he wanted to move her downstairs safely.

At the bottom, the gate locked behind her.

“You trusted him.”

“For thirty seconds.”

“What happened next?”

“He told me I had two choices.”

Sign a document surrendering my trust rights.

Or disappear until I did.

“You refused for three years?”

“No.”

My stomach dropped.

“I signed after six weeks.”

“Then why didn’t he let you go?”

May you like

She looked back at me.

“Because by then I had found something worse.”
