Chapter 14 - Responsibility

Claire’s signature changed everything.

Until then, her attorney argued she acted under coercion.

Now prosecutors had a document showing that one year after the wedding, Claire accepted formal control over the hidden living area.

She claimed Victor told her the paperwork was only for medical expenses.

The video showed otherwise.

Evelyn confronted her in a recorded meeting.

“You signed for me like I was property.”

“I know.”

“You could have opened the door.”

“I know.”

“You could have called Daniel.”

“I know.”

Then Evelyn said:

“Stop saying you know.”

Some apologies become another way to center the person who caused harm.

Claire began cooperating without asking for emotional access to Evelyn or me.

She gave prosecutors passwords.

Graham Pike’s network collapsed quickly.

Two former security employees admitted moving supplies into the lower level.

A private doctor admitted treating Evelyn twice under a false name.

An estate attorney admitted drafting the fake waiver.

Each person had a reason.

None sounded good once spoken aloud.

The foundation filed civil claims to recover diverted assets.

Mercer Strategic Holdings was placed under independent administration.

I resigned from every company role connected to my father.

Rebecca asked:

“You don’t have to.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because my name was used to hide this.”

“That wasn’t your choice.”

“No. But what happens next is.”

Evelyn heard about the resignation through Rebecca.

She called me that night.

Our first unscheduled call.

“You didn’t need to quit your life.”

“I didn’t.”

“What do you mean?”

“I quit his version of it.”

Then she laughed softly.

I had missed that sound.

Then Evelyn told me therapists had encouraged her to visit Mercer House once, only if she chose.

She wanted to see the bridal suite.

“With me?” I asked.

“Yes.”

My heart raced.

“When?”

“Tomorrow.”

May you like

Then she added:

“There’s something under the floor I never told police about.”
