Chapter 9 - Laura’s Voice

The surviving tape belonged to Evelyn’s mother.

Laura Carter recorded it eleven years before our wedding.

Her voice was calm.

That made it worse.

“Victor, if you hear this, I want you to understand that I know exactly what you did.”

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Laura described fake vendors.

Foundation grants routed into Mercer construction companies.

Consulting fees paid to shell entities.

Then she said something neither of us expected.

“Eleanor knows enough to stop you.”

I stared at the recorder.

Laura continued:

“She says she is afraid of losing the family if she confronts you publicly. I told her silence will cost more.”

Evelyn reached for my hand.

Then stopped before touching it.

That tiny hesitation hurt.

I said:

“You don’t have to.”

Laura’s tape continued.

She had transferred her voting rights into a trust for Evelyn as protection.

Marriage would activate them because she believed Evelyn would need independent legal standing once she built a family of her own.

To prevent Victor from controlling everything.

Then one final sentence:

“If Daniel is anything like the boy I know, tell him the truth before his father teaches him not to see it.”

My father had spent my entire life teaching me loyalty.

What he meant was obedience.

Then Detective Brooks entered with news.

Graham Pike wanted a deal.

He claimed Victor planned everything.

He claimed Claire was only a frightened accessory.

He claimed he never intended to keep Evelyn confined for years.

Evelyn laughed when Brooks told her.

“Three years is a long accident.”

Graham offered one piece of evidence in exchange for consideration.

Recorded on our wedding day.

It showed Victor in the bridal suite after Evelyn was taken below.

He was speaking to someone off camera.

Victor said:

“Daniel cannot know. He’ll choose her.”

A woman answered:

“Then make sure he hates her.”

I recognized the voice before anyone told me.

My mother.
