Chapter 13 - Claire’s Letter

I opened Claire’s letter three days later.
Daniel,
I am not going to ask you to forgive me.
Good.
The first night, I thought Dad would scare Evelyn, make her sign, and let her go. By morning, I knew that was a lie.
Claire described going downstairs at 6:00 a.m.
Evelyn was crying behind the gate.
He had a phone recording.
He told Claire if she opened the gate, he would send police evidence that Claire helped stage the train station disappearance.
Claire locked the gate again.
That moment became the center of her guilt.
I had imagined one dramatic betrayal.
Instead there were hundreds of smaller ones.
Every meal delivered without calling police.
Claire wrote:
I kept waiting for a version of rescue that did not destroy me. That version never existed.
That sentence stayed with me.
Evelyn asked about me constantly during the first year.
She told her I was “trying to heal.”
She never told Evelyn I was still searching.
“Why?” Evelyn asked when I showed her later.
Claire explained in the letter.
Because if Evelyn knew Daniel still loved her, she would never stop trying to escape, and Dad would move her somewhere I could not reach.
Claire believed hope made Evelyn more dangerous to Victor.
Protection through cruelty.
At the bottom, Claire wrote:
There is one thing I never told Dad or Graham. Evelyn gave me a memory card in year one. I hid it in Mom’s grave marker.
I called Detective Brooks immediately.
Police obtained permission to inspect the marker.
Behind a removable bronze plate was a sealed plastic packet.
Inside:
The video came from Evelyn’s hidden office.
Victor and Graham stood over a table covered in foundation records.
Then Claire entered the frame.
Victor said:
“You already helped us. There is no going back.”
Claire answered:
“I want her out.”
“No, sweetheart. You want yourself out.”
Then he slid a document toward her.
“Sign this and Evelyn becomes your problem.”
Claire signed.
Detective Brooks froze the frame.
The document title was visible.
