Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT ON THE STAIRS

The story came out in fragments.
Three months earlier, Sophie had woken after midnight and seen Daniel and Vanessa arguing at the top of the staircase.
Vanessa was holding Daniel’s phone.
She stepped backward, lost her balance, and fell three steps before catching the railing.
But Vanessa had photographed a bruise on her hip the next morning.
“She told Daddy he pushed her,” Sophie whispered.
“Did he?” Hannah asked carefully.
Sophie shook her head. “He was far.”
Daniel confirmed the argument when police questioned him.
“I never touched her.”
“Why didn’t you report the threat?” Detective Ellis asked.
“Because she told me if I left, she’d say I assaulted her in front of Sophie.”
“So you stayed.”
“I stayed because I was afraid she’d destroy my custody.”
Hannah’s anger came back hot. “And every day you stayed, Sophie paid for your fear.”
“Yes.”
That answer took the fight out of her.
The basement footage, the staircase bruise, the coached recordings—it was one system. Vanessa collected moments and stripped away context until everyone around her became whatever role she needed.
Abuser.
Disloyal child.
By morning police traced a rental car booked with one of Vanessa’s prepaid cards.
She was moving toward the airport.
Then investigators discovered she had purchased a ticket under a different surname.
Not for Sophie.
“She’s running,” Hannah said.
Detective Ellis shook her head. “Maybe.”
The detective placed another document on the table.
The child’s listed name was Sophia Vance.
The guardian was Vanessa Vance.
The birth date was Sophie’s.
The photograph was Sophie’s.
And the emergency contact listed beneath Vanessa’s name was a person none of them recognized.
Caleb Ward.
Detective Ellis looked at Daniel.
“Do you know him?”
Daniel’s face changed.
May you like
“Yes,” he whispered. “He’s Vanessa’s brother.”
Hannah had never known Vanessa had a brother.
