Chapter 18 - THE HEARING

Six months after Sophie first asked whether Hannah would still be her mother, the final custody hearing began.
Vanessa’s criminal charges were still pending, but enough facts had been established that the family court no longer treated the situation as a simple dispute between angry adults.
Daniel testified first.
He admitted he had accepted Vanessa’s explanations because challenging them threatened his marriage.
He admitted he had mistaken Hannah’s urgency for hostility and Sophie’s fear for adjustment problems.
Vanessa’s attorney objected twice.
The judge let him continue.
Then Elena testified.
Hannah testified last.
Vanessa’s attorney tried to provoke her.
“You dislike my client, correct?”
“Yes.”
“You wanted Daniel’s marriage to fail.”
“No.”
“You expect this court to believe you had no resentment toward the woman your former husband married?”
“I resented plenty of things. None of them made my daughter afraid to say my name.”
The courtroom went quiet.
The judge issued her ruling the following morning.
Hannah received primary physical custody.
Daniel received a graduated schedule beginning with supervised visits and expanding only on recommendation from Sophie’s therapist and a court-appointed parenting specialist.
Vanessa was barred from any contact with Sophie.
All major educational and medical decisions would remain jointly held only after Daniel completed specified conditions; until then, Hannah had temporary final authority.
It was not revenge.
Outside the courthouse, Daniel stopped Hannah.
“I signed the divorce papers yesterday.”
She nodded.
“I sold the house too.”
“The blue room?”
“The whole place.”
Daniel looked toward Sophie, who was holding Tessa’s hand near the steps.
“I know I don’t deserve credit for fixing damage I helped cause.”
“No,” Hannah said. “You don’t.”
He nodded.
Then he said, “But I’m going to fix what I can anyway.”
She listened, then looked at Hannah.
“Vanessa just accepted a plea agreement.”
Hannah exhaled.

Tessa wasn’t finished.
“There’s one condition you need to know about.”
