Chapter 15 - CALEB

Caleb Ward had been invisible by design.

Different last name. Different state. No social media connected to Vanessa.

But once police had the name, the rest came quickly.

He had two prior arrests for fraud, one conviction for identity theft, and a current job driving private airport shuttles outside Denver.

Vanessa had infrastructure.

Caleb was picked up at work before noon.

Then police showed him the Vancouver preschool application.

His loyalty collapsed.

“She told me the kid was hers.”

“She is not.”

Caleb shrugged. “I know that now.”

“Where is Vanessa?” Ellis asked.

He asked for a lawyer.

Then Caleb’s attorney negotiated.

Vanessa had arranged to meet him at an airport hotel at four.

She believed he had a counterfeit birth certificate ready.

Police set the room.

At 4:23, Ellis texted: She arrived.

At 4:25: In custody.

Hannah read that last line three times.

Sophie had been beside her the entire time, but some part of Hannah had not believed safety was real until Vanessa could no longer reach them.

That evening Daniel came for his supervised visit.

No speeches.

He sat at the kitchen table while Sophie painted.

It showed three houses.

One gray.

Daniel swallowed.

“What’s this one?”

“The blue room.”

“And the red X?”

“It can’t have me anymore.”

Hannah looked away.

Then Sophie pointed to the third house.

“That’s Daddy’s new house,” she said.

Daniel blinked. “You drew me a house?”

Sophie nodded.

“But no Vanessa.”

“No Vanessa.”

Sophie studied him seriously.

“Then maybe I can visit someday.”

Daniel started crying.

The next morning, Tessa called Hannah with worse news.

“Vanessa’s attorney just filed a motion.”

May you like

“For what?”

“To suppress every video Elena copied.”
