Chapter 2 - THE BLUE ROOM

Hannah did not ask what the black square meant that night.

Every instinct in her wanted answers. Every parenting book and every therapist she had ever spoken to after the divorce had taught her the opposite: do not interrogate a frightened child. Do not hand them words they did not choose.

So the next morning she made pancakes shaped like lopsided hearts and waited.

Sophie ate half of one.

“Do you like your room at Daddy’s?” Hannah asked casually.

Sophie’s fork stopped.

“The pink one?”

“The blue room.”

Hannah had never heard of a blue room.

“What blue room?”

Sophie’s eyes filled instantly. “I’m not supposed to say.”

She reached across the table but did not touch her. “You’re never in trouble for telling me something.”

Sophie stared at the syrup. “Vanessa says the blue room is for calming down.”

“What happens there?”

“She closes the door.”

“For how long?”

“I don’t know.”

“Is Daddy there?”

Sophie shook her head. “Daddy works.”

Daniel had recently started taking extra shifts at the architecture firm. He had told Hannah it was temporary. Sophie spent Wednesday afternoons with Vanessa until he came home.

He smiled at Sophie, then glanced at Hannah’s face. “What?”

“We need to talk.”

His smile vanished. “About?”

Hannah kept Sophie within sight but out of earshot. “What’s the blue room?”

Daniel blinked.

“You know about it.”

“It’s a guest room.”

“She says Vanessa locks her in there to calm down.”

Daniel rubbed his forehead. “Locks is probably Sophie’s word for closes.”

“She’s four.”

“Exactly.”

Hannah stared at him. “You don’t sound surprised.”

Daniel lowered his voice. “Vanessa uses quiet time when Sophie melts down. That’s normal.”

“Does quiet time involve making her call Vanessa Mommy?”

His expression changed.

Recognition.

“Hannah, don’t start.”

“Start what?”

“Turning every adjustment into evidence.”

Sophie appeared in the doorway holding her stuffed rabbit.

Daniel immediately brightened. “Ready, peanut?”

Sophie did not move.

Then Vanessa’s SUV pulled into the driveway behind him.

The moment Sophie saw it through the window, she wet herself on Hannah’s kitchen floor.
