Chapter 4 - THE SIGNATURE

The signature looked like Hannah’s.

That was the worst part.

Ms. Greene placed the photocopy on the preschool office desk and turned it so Hannah could see. Her name curved across the bottom in a convincing imitation of the way she had signed school forms for two years.

Above it, Vanessa had been added as “primary maternal contact.”

Hannah had been moved to “secondary.”

“I never signed this.”

Ms. Greene’s face tightened. “I believe you.”

“Who brought it in?”

“Mrs. Pierce.”

“Vanessa isn’t Mrs. Pierce.”

“She uses the name.”

Hannah swallowed her anger. “Do you have cameras?”

“Yes.”

“Save everything.”

That afternoon Hannah called family-law attorney Tessa Monroe, who had handled the original custody agreement.

When Hannah finished, she said, “Do not accuse Vanessa of forgery directly. Do not threaten Daniel. Preserve the chart, the school form, and your notes. And schedule Sophie with a child therapist who understands high-conflict custody cases.”

“You think this is that serious?”

“I think you called me because you already know it is.”

“What the hell did you say to the school?”

Hannah stared out the kitchen window. “I told them I didn’t sign a form removing myself as primary contact.”

Then: “Vanessa said you agreed.”

“Did you see me agree?”

“She said you discussed it.”

“So she forged my signature and you’re defending her?”

“Stop using criminal words.”

“She copied my name.”

Daniel exhaled sharply. “You are turning a clerical misunderstanding into war.”

“No, Daniel. I’m noticing someone has been preparing paperwork involving my daughter without telling me.”

His voice dropped. “Be careful, Hannah.”

The threat was soft enough that he could deny it later.

That night Sophie woke screaming.

Hannah ran into her room.

Sophie was standing on the mattress, pushing both hands against the wall.

“No camera,” she cried. “No camera, no camera, no camera.”

Hannah climbed onto the bed and held her.

“What camera?”

May you like

Sophie sobbed until she could barely speak.

Then she whispered, “The one Vanessa uses when I say the wrong mommy words.”
