Chapter 16 - THE EVIDENCE FIGHT

Vanessa’s defense attacked the evidence from every direction.

Elena had copied private security footage without permission.

The cloud archive had been accessed after Daniel shared credentials under emotional distress.

Sophie’s statements, they argued, had been contaminated by Hannah and Dr. Shah.

Even the reward chart was described as “a benign behavior tool maliciously reinterpreted.”

It was the first time she understood how ugly truth could look when placed inside legal language.

Vanessa appeared in person wearing jail-issued clothing beneath a gray cardigan her attorney had brought.

She also looked directly at Sophie’s empty seat as if expecting the child to appear.

Judge Karen Holt did not suppress the videos.

Daniel owned the home and had authorized cloud access. The court also allowed the preserved school records, the forged forms, and metadata from Vanessa’s devices.

But the judge issued a warning.

“Sophie Pierce is not a piece of evidence. She is a child. This court will not permit either parent to turn her into a witness for their emotional grievances.”

Afterward, Daniel’s attorney approached Tessa.

Daniel wanted to amend the custody order voluntarily.

He would accept supervised parenting time, complete parenting education, attend individual therapy, and waive any objection to Hannah having temporary primary custody.

“Is this strategy?”

Tessa said, “Probably partly. But people can do the right thing for mixed reasons.”

That night Daniel called.

“I’m not asking you to trust me,” he said.

“Good.”

“I’m asking for a chance to become someone Sophie can trust.”

“That’s between you and Sophie.”

“I know.”

For once, he did.

Two weeks later, Vanessa’s criminal case took an unexpected turn.

Vanessa was speaking to someone.

A woman.

The voice said, “If you want the mother erased, you have to make the child ask for it herself.”

Vanessa answered, “I’m almost there.”

Hannah felt ice move through her.

“Who is that woman?”

The prosecutor looked grim.

“We were hoping you could tell us.”

Hannah listened again.

Then she recognized the voice.

It belonged to Margo Vance, the custody evaluator.
