Chapter 19 - NO MORE SECRETS

Vanessa’s plea required her to surrender all remaining recordings, documents, and digital accounts connected to Sophie.
The prosecutor wanted certainty that no hidden copies could appear years later.
In exchange, Vanessa avoided trial on several lesser counts but pleaded guilty to forgery, unlawful restraint, evidence tampering, and attempted custodial interference.
Daniel hated that she would not face the maximum possible sentence.
“I don’t need her destroyed,” she told Tessa. “I need her gone from Sophie’s life.”
She did not need to.
Police cataloged them. Attorneys preserved what the law required. Dr. Shah advised against turning Sophie’s worst months into family archives.

Three hours later, Sophie came running across the parking lot carrying a paper planet.
“Mommy!”
Hannah crouched and caught her.
He did not look wounded by the word anymore.
Not repaired.
That night, Sophie climbed into Hannah’s bed with her rabbit.
“Mommy?”
“Yeah?”
“If I call Daddy’s next girlfriend her name, is that mean?”
Hannah laughed softly.
“No.”
“What if she wants a mommy name?”
“Then she can want one.”
Sophie considered this very seriously.
“What if I don’t give it to her?”
Hannah kissed her forehead.
“Then it still belongs to you.”
Sophie smiled.
May you like
Then she asked the question Hannah had been waiting six months to hear.
“Can I tell you what really happened the first day in the blue room?”
