Chapter 1 - The Sound Through the Front Door

My four-year-old granddaughter was holding a screaming baby over a sink full of dirty dishes when her stepmother hit her. Her father looked up from his phone, saw it happen, and looked away.

I was outside the front door when Lily cried, “Daddy, please!”

I still remember the way those two words cut through the glass.

I used my spare key. In the kitchen, Lily stood on a wooden stool, her knees shaking. One-year-old Noah hung against her hip. Soap ran down her pajama sleeve. Vanessa stood behind her with one hand raised.

“Put him down,” I told Lily. “I’ve got you.”

Vanessa stepped in front of me. “Margaret, this is a private matter.”

“A child is not a private matter.”

I lifted Noah into my arms, then helped Lily off the stool. She clung to my skirt like she was afraid the floor might disappear.

Daniel, my son, finally rose from the couch.

“Mom, you're overreacting.”

“I watched your wife hit her.”

“She was frustrated,” he said.

Lily flinched at the word. That tiny movement made me angrier than anything Daniel could have said.

Vanessa reached for Lily. I moved between them.

“Do not touch her again.”

Vanessa shoved my shoulder. I slapped her once. Daniel grabbed my arm, and I pushed him off. He stumbled into a bookshelf; books and photographs hit the floor. Vanessa rushed forward again. I stepped away, keeping myself between her and the children. I hated that I had added to the noise around them. Then I backed toward the door, pulled out my phone, and called 911.

“I need officers and someone trained to help children,” I said. “My granddaughter is four. She isn't safe here.”

Vanessa went quiet. Daniel stared at the phone as if it had betrayed him.

Lily pressed her face against my coat.

“Grandma,” she whispered, “don't let her take the blue phone.”

“Why, honey?”

“That's where she keeps the videos.”

Vanessa's eyes shot toward the kitchen drawer.
