Chapter 2 - The Blue Phone

Vanessa reached the drawer before Daniel understood what Lily had said. She grabbed a phone in a bright blue case and slipped it under her arm.
“Those are family videos,” she told the officers who arrived six minutes later. “You can't just take my things.”
Officer Melissa Grant separated the adults. Her partner sat beside Lily on the living-room rug, speaking so softly that Lily eventually let him see the mark near her ear.
“I didn't mean to be bad,” she whispered.
“You aren't in trouble,” he said.
Vanessa immediately offered her explanation. Lily was difficult. Lily made Noah cry. Lily needed structure because her mother had died and Margaret spoiled her.
Then she opened a video on the blue phone.
It showed Lily reaching toward Noah's stroller. The stroller tipped. Noah cried. Vanessa paused the clip and pointed at Lily's face.
“See? She gets jealous.”
“Play the rest,” I said.
“There isn't any more.”
But I had noticed the progress bar stop halfway through.
Officer Grant noticed too.
Daniel stood with his arms crossed. “Vanessa's been trying to tell me how hard things are.”
“And Lily has been trying to tell you,” I said. “Which one did you listen to?”
He couldn't answer.
The officers arranged medical checks for both children and contacted an emergency child-protection worker. Daniel agreed that Lily and Noah could stay with me that night under a temporary safety plan while officials assessed the home. Vanessa protested until Grant warned her to step back. After the officers gathered statements and documented what they could, they took Vanessa aside for further questioning.
At the hospital Lily refused a juice box until I promised Noah could have one too.
A nurse asked why she worried so much about him.
“Because I'm the big one,” Lily said.
I held her hand. “You're four, sweetheart. You're little too.”

She studied my face as though I had told her a wonderful lie.
Then she whispered, “Vanessa said the videos would make Daddy choose which kid to keep.”
