Chapter 3 - The Eye Behind the Books

By midnight both children were asleep at my house. Lily had insisted that Noah's portable crib be close enough for her to see from bed.

Back at the empty house, Daniel climbed the stairs to collect her favorite stuffed rabbit. I learned this part later from the investigators and Daniel himself. He almost missed the black dot between the picture books.

He recognized the lens immediately. He had installed a three-camera home system months earlier after a break-in down the street. Vanessa had complained that the devices made her feel watched. She said she had shut the system down.

But a small green light glowed behind Lily's books.

Daniel called Officer Grant instead of touching it. A detective obtained authority to preserve the recordings. By morning, investigators had found two more cameras concealed in familiar places: near the kitchen cabinets and in the hallway. The recorder in the utility closet had been quietly saving footage for months.

When Detective Ana Ortiz asked Daniel why he had never checked the system, he rubbed his forehead.

“I believed my wife when she said it was off.”

“Did you believe Lily when she said she was scared?”

He stared at the table.

Ortiz showed him the first recovered clip. Vanessa was standing beside the sink. Lily was washing a plate on a stool. Noah was crying against her hip. The scene was almost identical to the one I'd walked into.

The date was from six weeks earlier.

In the background, Daniel crossed the kitchen holding a travel mug.

Lily called, “Daddy, can you help?”

He answered without turning around.

“Listen to Vanessa. I'm late.”

Daniel pushed back his chair in the interview room.

“Turn it off.”

Ortiz didn't. She clicked into a folder labeled LILY INCIDENTS. There were twenty-three edited clips inside, each with a careful title.

The last file was named: PROOF FOR DANIEL—FRIDAY.

And Friday was the day Vanessa had arranged to send Lily away.
