Chapter 15 - What the Last Camera Held

The third camera faced the hallway outside Lily's bedroom. It wasn't the clearest recording. The sound crackled. But it captured the moment Daniel had insisted he knew nothing about.

Three weeks before I called the police, Vanessa stopped him outside Lily's door.

“She can't stay like this,” she said. “She's ruining our marriage.”

Daniel rubbed his eyes. “She's four.”

“Then find somewhere for her to go. Your mother can take her. My sister can take her. I don't care.”

He looked toward Lily's closed door.

“I don't want to have this conversation again.”

“Then let me handle it.”

Daniel hesitated. He did not ask where Vanessa would send Lily, who would care for her, or whether she would be safe.

He said, “Fine. Just make the fighting stop.”

There it was. Not a forged signature or a misunderstanding. A father handing away his responsibility because he was tired of being uncomfortable.

Ortiz played the recording once. She did not need to play it twice.

Daniel buried his face in his hands.

“I didn't know about Tennessee.”

“No,” Ortiz said. “But you told her she could handle it.”

“I thought she meant asking my mother.”

“Did you call your mother? Did you check on Lily afterward?”

He shook his head.

For the first time, Daniel did not blame stress, work, Vanessa, or a misunderstanding. He asked to make a statement about every warning he'd ignored. He gave the investigators access to his messages and bank records. He asked whether his own behavior could be prosecuted.

Ortiz answered carefully. “That decision belongs to the prosecutor.”

Two days later, Daniel received a summons connected to the investigation into Lily's neglect.

He called me, his voice shaking.

“Mom, they aren't only charging Vanessa.”
