Chapter 16 - The Man Who Heard Everything

The prosecutor charged Daniel with child neglect for the danger he had witnessed and failed to stop. Vanessa faced allegations arising from the recordings, the false documents, and Lily's missing money. Renée was being investigated for her part in the planned transfer and the payments.
Daniel wanted to tell me he was scared. I listened, then said the only thing that mattered.
“Lily was scared every day. You had a door you could walk through.”
At his first court appearance, Daniel entered a plea through his attorney and agreed to abide by all child-contact restrictions. Outside, reporters from a local station waited by the steps. He ignored their questions. That was the first time I had seen my son choose silence for the right reason.
I was not proud of him yet. I was relieved he had stopped trying to make the story about his humiliation.
Back at my house, Lily started meeting with a counselor who used play rather than frightening questions to help her understand what had happened. One afternoon, she arranged toy animals around a plastic table. A little rabbit sat on the floor.
“Where does the rabbit belong?” the counselor asked.
Lily set the rabbit beside the trash can.
“Why there?”
“That's the bad seat.”
“Who told the rabbit it was bad?”
Lily considered that. Then she moved the rabbit into an empty chair.
“Nobody,” she said.
The counselor told me afterward that this was progress, though progress would be uneven. Some nights Lily still woke crying. Some mornings she refused breakfast because she was afraid of taking too much.
That evening, a court representative called to say Vanessa intended to challenge my placement by using the video of our confrontation.

I looked at the bruised memory of my own anger and understood something uncomfortable.
To protect Lily, I would have to tell the truth about my mistakes too.
