Chapter 19 - No More Excuses

Daniel sat on the carpet for a long moment. He didn't say he was busy. He didn't say Vanessa had confused him. He didn't say he had been scared of fighting.
“Because I was wrong,” he answered. “I wanted things to be easy for me, and I let them be hard for you. I should have come every time.”
Lily looked at the drawing in her lap.
“Can Grandma take me home now?”
“Yes,” Daniel said. “You can go.”
He cried after she left, the supervisor later told me. But Lily didn't have to comfort him. That was one important thing he had finally learned.
The cases took months. Renée admitted her role in the fraudulent transfers and the planned move, accepted a negotiated sentence, and agreed to restitution. Vanessa eventually entered guilty pleas to multiple offenses involving the children and financial documents. Her sentence included incarceration and restrictions on contact. The evidence, not a dramatic speech, had made her denials impossible to sustain.
Daniel also accepted responsibility for neglect. The court imposed supervision, required treatment and parenting work, and made clear that access to the children would depend on their safety and needs, not his wishes. He signed an enforceable repayment agreement concerning Lily's account. None of that erased what he had done.
The family court continued both children's placement with me, with further review required before any unsupervised return to a parent could be considered. Noah's relationship with his mother would be addressed separately under the protective orders.
After the final hearing, Daniel stopped me in the hallway.
“Will she ever forgive me?” he asked.
“I don't know,” I said. “Your job isn't to make her forgive you. Your job is to become someone she never has to be afraid of again.”

That night, Lily pulled the chair next to mine at dinner.
“Grandma,” she asked, “if I stop taking care of Noah, can I still be his big sister?”
