Chapter 10 - A Mother Without a Title

The emergency hearing took place on a gray Monday morning. I wore my old navy coat because Lily liked its wooden buttons. She had counted them the night before to help herself fall asleep.

Vanessa arrived with an attorney and a neat white blouse, looking like someone who had never raised her voice in her life. Daniel sat behind her but did not touch her hand.

Her attorney argued that the children should return to their parents and that I had become violent during an argument.

The judge asked me directly, “Did you strike Mrs. Cole?”

“Yes,” I said. “I did during the confrontation after I saw her hit Lily. I regret the escalation. I called the police because the children needed help.”

I didn't pretend I was perfect. Lily deserved better than another adult who used anger as an excuse.

Andrea explained the safety concerns and the children's medical assessments. Detective Ortiz outlined the existence of recovered recordings without playing them in open court. The judge ordered the children to remain with me temporarily while the investigation continued. Daniel was offered supervised contact when clinicians considered the children ready; Vanessa was barred from direct contact pending further review.

On the courthouse steps, Daniel said, “Mom, she's still my wife.”

“And Lily is still your daughter.”

“I don't know what to believe anymore.”

“You had a front-row seat. Start there.”

Vanessa walked past us, expressionless, until her phone rang. She saw the caller and went pale.

Ortiz later told Daniel that investigators had found an audio file attached to the false complaint against me. It wasn't a witness statement. It was Vanessa rehearsing instructions for him.

“Say your mother is losing it,” she told him on the recording. “Say Lily is dangerous. You want our family to survive, don't you?”

Daniel's own voice answered, very quietly, “Tell me what to sign.”
