Chapter 11 - The Family Meeting

Police reached Renee's house before Daniel did.
She was safe. Trent was gone.
He had confronted her after learning she changed her statement. He took her laptop and threatened to "fix what she broke."
By sunset, Detective Mason Grant had enough to question Trent, Vanessa, and Margaret about witness intimidation and the attempted grab in the hotel stairwell.
But all three had lawyers before police reached them.
That night, Daniel received an invitation from Uncle Paul.
FAMILY MEETING. OLD REED HOUSE. 8 PM. COME ALONE IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH.
Rachel told him not to go.
Daniel went anyway, with Detective Grant parked two blocks away and his phone recording.
The old Reed house had belonged to Daniel's grandparents. Inside, Paul, Renee, two aunts, and three cousins sat around the long dining table.
Nobody looked proud.
Paul spoke first.
"Your mother has controlled this family for thirty years. Money, jobs, loans. You cross her, you lose something."
Daniel looked from face to face.
"So you let her hurt a two-year-old?"
No one answered.
"I want names. Every person who saw it. Every person who knew."
One by one, hands lifted.
Six people.
Daniel felt sick.
Aunt Lorraine started crying. "We told ourselves Vanessa was strict. Margaret said Lily was spoiled."
"She was two."
"I know."
Paul pushed an envelope toward Daniel.
Inside were copies of checks from Margaret to relatives, all dated within the last three months.
At the bottom was a contract labeled CONFIDENTIAL FAMILY SUPPORT AGREEMENT.
In exchange for debt relief, each signer agreed to support Margaret's guardianship petition if requested.
Daniel looked up.
"You sold testimony."
Paul whispered, "Yes."
Then the front window exploded inward.

A brick landed on the table.
Taped to it was a photograph of Lily sleeping in the hotel room.
