Chapter 5 - The Story They Prepared

Daniel read the petition until the words blurred.
According to Margaret, he had become unstable after Emma's death. He traveled excessively. He drank. He shouted around Lily. He had "episodes of uncontrolled aggression."
Vanessa's declaration claimed she feared Daniel might hurt the child.
Nora pointed to the final page. "There's a witness list."
Paul. Trent. Renee.
The same people who had watched Lily on the floor.
"They were building this before last night," Daniel said.
"It appears so."
His attorney, Rachel Kim, arrived within an hour. She read the filing and swore under her breath.
"They're going to use your response at dinner," she said. "Vanessa fell. Margaret hit the table. They have witnesses."
"My daughter had bruises."
"Which matters. But family court is about patterns. They already wrote your pattern before the incident happened."
Daniel looked at Lily coloring on the hotel carpet.
"Why would my mother want guardianship?"
Rachel didn't answer immediately.
"What does Lily own?"
Daniel frowned. "She's two."
"That's not what I asked."
Emma had come from money, though she never lived like it. Her grandfather founded a regional logistics company. When Emma died, her shares passed into trust for Lily.
Daniel pulled up the estate summary.
Rachel leaned closer.
"Forty-two percent?"
"Of Hartwell Logistics. Yes."
"Current value?"
"Around eleven million. Maybe more."
Rachel's face went still.
"Who votes those shares while Lily is a minor?"
Daniel opened the trust agreement.
He read one paragraph.
Then read it again.
If Daniel became incapacitated, legally disqualified, or lost custody, voting authority passed to Lily's court-appointed guardian.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.

A man whispered, "Check Hartwell's board meeting scheduled for Friday. Your mother is already on the agenda."
Then the caller hung up.
