Chapter 14 - The Childhood He Forgot
The folder contained pediatric records, old photographs, and a social worker's report from thirty years earlier.
Daniel read the first paragraph twice.
Four-year-old male presents with bruising to upper arms and repeated statements that mother "locks me in the dark room" when father is away.
His knees went weak.
"No."
There were more reports. A neighbor had called police. A preschool teacher documented hunger. Daniel's father, Thomas, denied everything.
Then the case disappeared.
"How?" Daniel asked.
Rachel turned a page. "Your grandfather donated to the hospital and sat on the county foundation board."
Daniel remembered fragments. A basement door. A light switch outside the room. His mother telling him boys who cried became weak men.
He had buried it so completely he once believed his childhood was strict but normal.
Emma's letter continued.
When Lily was born, I saw Margaret use the same language with her that she once used with you. I started researching. Your aunt Lorraine gave me copies of these records. I planned to show you after I secured Lily's trust.
Daniel wiped his eyes.
Emma had been fighting a battle he never knew existed.
The flash drive held contracts between Margaret and Richard Kendrick. North Vale would pay Margaret four million dollars after acquiring Hartwell.
A side agreement promised Vanessa a board seat after marrying Daniel.
Then Rachel opened the final folder.
Inside was a draft prenuptial amendment that Daniel had never seen.
It transferred certain marital voting rights to Vanessa upon marriage.
His signature was already on it.
Forged.
Elaine whispered, "They weren't waiting for the guardianship case. They had three different ways to reach Lily's shares."
Daniel looked at the date of the forgery.
It was the same day Vanessa had insisted he sign a stack of wedding venue contracts.
His phone buzzed.
A message from Detective Grant.
