Chapter 17 - What 'Won't Need Her' Meant
Detective Grant replayed Vanessa's sentence.
"We won't need the kid much longer anyway."
Daniel felt every worst possibility hit at once.
Rachel forced the room back toward facts. "What was supposed to happen after the wedding?"
Trent answered.
"Boarding school eventually. Not now. They planned to put Lily in a private behavioral program in Vermont once Margaret had guardianship."
"She's two."
"The program takes children as young as three. They were going to wait."
Daniel stared at him in disgust.
"So Vanessa marries me, Margaret gets Lily, North Vale gets Hartwell, and my daughter gets shipped away."
Trent nodded.
"Because Lily was the paperwork problem."
That phrase broke something inside Daniel.
His daughter had been treated as an obstacle on a spreadsheet.
Police arrested Vanessa that night on charges related to child abuse, evidence tampering, conspiracy, and the hotel intrusion. Margaret was taken into custody on witness intimidation and conspiracy counts while prosecutors reviewed the larger case.
Richard Kendrick resigned from North Vale before dawn.
Dr. Moss stopped answering calls.
For forty-eight hours, Daniel believed the danger was shrinking.
Then Nora called.
"Someone filed a new CPS complaint."
Daniel almost laughed from exhaustion. "Against me?"
"Yes. Anonymous caller claims you're coaching Lily and isolating her from family."
"They've been arrested."
"The complaint was submitted before the arrests."
Daniel rubbed his face.
"Does it matter?"
"Not by itself. But there is an attached audio file."
"What audio file?"
Nora sent it.
Daniel pressed play.
His own voice filled the speaker.
"If you don't say what I tell you, Daddy will leave you alone forever."
Daniel went still.
He had never said those words.
Marcus listened once and swore.
"It's synthetic. Somebody cloned your voice."
Rachel looked at the timestamp.
May you like
The file had been created that morning.
After Vanessa and Margaret were already in custody.
