Chapter 19 - Emma's Last Fight

Dr. Moss's file did not prove anyone caused Emma's death.
It proved something almost as cruel.
For months before she died, Margaret and Richard had tried to build a psychiatric case against her.
Moss had written evaluations he never performed. Vanessa had supplied observations despite not yet being publicly connected to Daniel. Margaret had documented "irrational maternal paranoia" whenever Emma complained about Lily's treatment.
Emma knew.
And she fought back.
Her final legal memo, hidden in Moss's file because he had taken it from another attorney's office, instructed Hartwell never to allow Margaret, Richard, Vanessa, or any North Vale affiliate to exercise control over Lily's shares.
It also appointed an independent fiduciary if Daniel's custody was ever challenged under suspicious circumstances.
Rachel smiled for the first time in days.
"Emma protected Lily from them before they even finished the plan."
Daniel looked at the signature.
"And I didn't protect either of them."
"You didn't know."
"I should have seen more."
Rachel didn't argue.
That mattered to Daniel. He was tired of people using comforting lies to escape responsibility.
At the preliminary hearing, Renee, Lorraine, Trent, and Paul testified.
The videos played.
The forged documents were entered into evidence.
Margaret sat expressionless until prosecutors played Lily saying, "No. Daddy hugs."
Then her mouth tightened.
Vanessa cried through most of the hearing.
Daniel felt nothing when he looked at her.
The judge continued the protective orders and denied Margaret any contact with Lily.
Outside court, reporters shouted questions.
Daniel ignored them until one asked, "Mr. Reed, do you blame your family?"
He stopped.
"I blame every adult who saw a child being hurt and decided silence was easier. Including me for every sign I explained away."
That quote ran everywhere.
That night, Lily slept through until morning for the first time in months.
When Daniel woke, he found her standing beside his bed holding Emma's restored photograph.

"Daddy," she said, "put Mommy back?"
Daniel started crying before he could answer.
