Chapter 9 - What Emma Saw

Renee met Daniel in the parking garage beneath Rachel's office.
She looked like she hadn't slept.
"Emma caught Margaret locking Lily in the pantry," she said.
Daniel stared at her.
"Lily was a baby."
"Eleven months old. She wouldn't stop crying. Margaret said she needed to learn that crying didn't control adults. Emma lost it. They had a huge fight."
"Why didn't Emma tell me?"
"She tried."
Daniel's face went numb.
Renee opened her purse and handed him an old phone.
"Emma gave me this two weeks before she died. She said if anything happened to her, I should give it to you. I got scared. Margaret knew I had debts. She paid them off and told me to forget Emma ever gave me anything."
Daniel could barely speak.
"You kept it for eleven months?"
"I was a coward."
The phone still powered on.
There were voice memos.
The first was Emma's voice.
"Daniel, if you're hearing this, it means I couldn't make you understand while I was here. Your mother is not safe around Lily. She keeps calling discipline what I call cruelty. And she keeps asking about the trust."
Daniel covered his mouth.
Emma continued.
"Vanessa Kendrick has been meeting with Margaret. I saw them together before you ever met Vanessa."
Rachel looked up sharply.
A second memo contained photographs of documents: draft guardianship papers, North Vale correspondence, and a handwritten note from Margaret.
REMOVE EMMA AS TRUSTEE IF MEDICALLY INCAPACITATED.
Daniel's hands shook.
"Emma was trustee before me."
Rachel nodded slowly. "And if she became incapacitated, control moved to you. If you later lost custody, it moved to the guardian."
A final image loaded.
A prescription bottle sat beside a typed letter from a private psychiatrist Daniel had never heard of.
At the bottom was a sentence that made Rachel stand up.
