Chapter 16 - The Bank Lobby

They reached the bank at 4:18 p.m.

Margaret was already there.

Daniel saw her through the glass doors walking toward the private vault corridor with a bank employee.

"Stop her," Grant told security.

Margaret turned when the guard called her name.

For one second, her face showed surprise.

Then she ran.

A sixty-three-year-old woman in a tailored coat sprinted past the reception desk, knocked over a sign, and shoved through a side door into the parking garage.

Daniel followed before anyone could stop him.

"Mom!"

She reached her car and yanked the door open.

Daniel grabbed the edge before she could close it.

"This ends now."

"You ungrateful little fool."

"You hurt my daughter."

"I made you strong. I was trying to make her strong too."

Daniel stared at her.

There it was. No apology. No misunderstanding. A belief.

"You made me afraid," he said. "I just forgot the name of the feeling."

Grant arrived with two officers.

Margaret released the car door.

The bank froze the box under a warrant request.

By 7:00, a judge authorized the search.

Inside were flash drives, signed payoff agreements, hotel access information, copies of Lily's medical records, and dozens of videos.

One showed Vanessa pinching Lily's arm until she cried.

Another showed Margaret taking food away.

Then came the rehearsal.

Lily sat in a chair clutching a stuffed bear.

Margaret's voice came from behind the camera.

"Say, 'Daddy scares me.'"

Lily shook her head.

"No. Daddy hugs."

"Say it."

"No."

A hand entered the frame and slapped the table beside her.

Lily screamed.

Daniel turned away.

But the video kept playing.

And in the final five seconds, Vanessa stepped into frame and said something no one expected.

"Once the wedding is done, we won't need the kid much longer anyway."
