Chapter 10 - 3:15 to 6:45
Maria had mounted the nanny cam above the kitchen door with removable adhesive.
Only she knew.
Or she thought only she knew.
Now there was a clean rectangle in the dust where it had been.
Daniel checked the house footage.
The main kitchen camera showed Vanessa entering alone Sunday morning while everyone was at church with Lily’s grandmother.
She stood beneath the nanny cam.
Three minutes later, it resumed.
“She found it,” Maria whispered.
Daniel asked:
“Where would she put the card?”
Then remembered Vanessa never carried the same purse twice during the week.
But she always carried one item.
Police searched the Manhattan hotel room with consent after Vanessa’s attorney arranged retrieval of property.
Then Lily said something at dinner.
“The shoe box.”
“What shoe box?”
“Vanessa put little black thing in shoe box.”
“When?”
“Sunday.”
“Where?”
Vanessa’s closet had already been searched.
Maria remembered a return label she had thrown away.
Vanessa had returned a pair Sunday afternoon.
The box had been processed in their back room.
Inside, beneath tissue paper, taped flat against the cardboard:
The footage was worse than Daniel imagined.
Not violent in the way his anger expected.
At 3:15 every weekday, Vanessa locked the refrigerator.
At 3:30, she removed snacks from Lily’s backpack.
At 4:00, she placed food on the counter where Lily could see it.
If Lily asked, Vanessa sometimes said no.
If Lily took anything, Vanessa turned toward the main camera and called it stealing.
The final clip showed Friday.
Lily whispered:
“Please, I’m hungry.”
Vanessa answered:
“Then learn what happens when you embarrass me.”
Rachel asked:
“What does that mean?”
The night before, Lily had corrected Vanessa in front of guests.
Vanessa claimed Lily had forgotten a piano piece.
Lily said:
“You never took me to practice.”
Then the nanny cam captured something else.
After Lily went upstairs, Vanessa made a phone call.
“It’s working,” she said.
A man answered:
“Good. Keep the weight loss visible.”
Daniel went cold.
Vanessa replied:
May you like
“By Monday, she’ll look neglected enough.”
And the voice on the other end belonged to Dr. Paul Mercer.
