Chapter 5 - The Password

The login attempt came from Daniel’s own house.
Not Vanessa’s car.
Not a hotel.
The house.
Daniel looked at Maria.
“Who’s upstairs?”
“No one.”
Then the technician found the device.
An old tablet hidden behind books in Daniel’s study.
Vanessa had left it connected to the Wi-Fi.
Saved passwords filled the browser.
Daniel felt exposed in a way money could not fix.
Rachel arrived before midnight.
She brought an investigator and a stack of legal pads.
“First rule,” she told Daniel. “Do not confront Vanessa by phone.”
“I already threw her out.”
“That is not the same thing.”
Lily slept in Maria’s room because she refused to go upstairs alone.
Most of all, he hated how long it had happened while he traveled.
“Don’t make guilt your next bad decision.”
“Maria already said something like that.”
“Smart woman.”
Maria appeared in the doorway.
“I found this.”
Rachel asked:
“Anything else?”
“Lily’s snacks started disappearing around then.”
Vanessa told Daniel the child had become picky.
Then she began sending photos of untouched dinners.
Proof, supposedly, that Lily refused meals.
Maria had never seen those dinners served.
Rachel wrote:
CONTROL FOOD.
CONTROL NARRATIVE.
CREATE RECORD.
You are overreacting because Maria hates me.
Then:
Lily needs help. I’m the only one brave enough to admit it.
Then:
Lily’s school backpack sat beside her desk.
Inside they found three things.
A small plastic bag of crackers.
The letter was addressed to Lily’s school counselor.
My dad leaves me alone with Vanessa and I am scared he won’t believe me.
Then Rachel touched the paper.
“Wait.”
“This isn’t Lily’s handwriting.”
Maria whispered:
“Someone wanted the school to find it.”

Daniel looked at the date written at the top.
Tomorrow.
