Chapter 6 - Monday’s Plan

Vanessa had planned for the letter to be found Monday.
That meant the weekend mattered.
Rachel reconstructed it.
A frightened child.
A concerned school counselor.
A fake letter saying Dad does not believe me.
Edited footage showing emotional outbursts.
A “medical” meal plan.
Then Vanessa could present herself as the adult trying to intervene.
“She was going to accuse me.”
“Possibly neglect. Possibly instability in the home.”
“For what?”
“To create leverage.”
“Or to separate them.”
Vanessa had spent months telling him Lily needed “more independence.”
More nights at Vanessa’s apartment.
A private therapist Vanessa selected.
Every suggestion moved Lily farther from people who knew her.
Then Maria remembered something.
“Three weeks ago, Vanessa asked me for Lily’s passport.”
“Why?”
“She said you were planning a surprise trip.”
“I wasn’t.”
Rachel immediately checked Lily’s documents.
So was her birth certificate.
Rachel stopped him from calling again.
Because Vanessa was not Lily’s parent, possession of the child’s documents mattered.
Then Daniel remembered a reservation confirmation.
Vanessa had mentioned a resort in Toronto.
Maria searched the printer history.
VANESSA STERLING.
LILY OLESON.
Flight date:
“Did you consent to this?”
“No.”
The ticket had been canceled two hours earlier.
Vanessa knew the plan had collapsed.
Then another detail surfaced.
The reservation used a different surname for Lily.
LILY HANNAH STERLING.
Maria whispered:
“She was already calling her by her name.”
“On paper.”
That was enough to scare Daniel.
She came downstairs holding Maria’s hand.
“Daddy?”
“Yeah, baby?”
“Is Vanessa coming back?”
“No.”
“Promise?”
Rachel had warned him not to make promises legal systems controlled.
So he said:
“She is not coming into this house tonight. I’m here.”
Then reached into her pajama pocket.
“I took this.”
“From where?”
“Vanessa’s bag.”
“Why?”
“Because she said the blue box was where she kept things Daddy wasn’t allowed to see.”
Daniel and Rachel looked at each other.
Maria asked:
May you like
“Where’s the blue box?”
Lily pointed toward the basement.
