Chapter 11 - The Doctor

Dr. Paul Mercer stopped cooperating.
So investigators used records.
Payments first.
Vanessa paid him $18,000 over four months.
Not through Harbor Family Services.
Through a consulting company owned by his brother.
Mercer had never been Lily’s treating psychologist.
He had never performed a full evaluation.
Yet he wrote a letter describing her as unstable.
Rachel called it what it was.
Daniel called it something worse.
“Words matter.”
The case did not need exaggeration.
Mercer’s lawyer eventually offered a statement.
Vanessa wanted documentation supporting residential placement.
Mercer said he believed the child had “behavior concerns.”
Then investigators played the nanny-cam call.
Keep the weight loss visible.
He claimed the comment referred to “monitoring health.”
The state medical board opened an investigation.
Harbor Family Services suspended his referral privileges.
Then Rachel discovered why Vanessa needed Lily placed outside the home.
The trust required court permission for large discretionary payments.
But educational and therapeutic residential expenses could be paid directly from the trust with trustee approval.
If Daniel were removed temporarily as trustee and Vanessa appointed guardian, she could approve enormous payments to Harbor.
Rachel traced Harbor’s ownership.
Daniel stared at the structure.
“So they send Lily away and pay themselves from her trust.”
“Potentially hundreds of thousands a year.”
Maria whispered:
“And they make her look too troubled to come home.”
He had spent his career believing complicated problems had complicated motives.
Then Lily came into the office.
Maria tried to guide her back out.
“What’s that?”
Then a small red square near the stairs.
“What’s this?”
“The lock.”
“What lock?”
“Under stairs.”
The house had a shallow storage closet beneath the main staircase.
At the back wall, a new padlock secured a narrow cabinet.
The key from the blue box did not fit.
Inside the cabinet were sealed envelopes.
A second phone.
And a folder labeled:
DANIEL — FAILURE LOG.

He opened it.
Vanessa had been building a case against him too.
