Chapter 15 - Vanessa Talks
Vanessa agreed to an interview with counsel present.
Daniel did not attend.
Rachel did.
Maria was not asked to.
Lily was never brought near it.
Vanessa admitted taking Hannah’s letter.
She admitted accessing Daniel’s passwords.
She admitted assembling the custody file.
She admitted working with Sloan.
She admitted Mark funded the plan.
But when asked about food restriction, she minimized.
“I was trying to control behavior.”
The nanny-cam recording played.
Please… I haven’t eaten anything.
Rachel later told Daniel:
“She cried.”
Vanessa claimed she did not intend long-term residential placement.
She said Harbor was supposed to create temporary separation.
Enough for her to gain guardianship.
Enough to access trust distributions.
Enough to “stabilize the family.”
“That was her phrase?”
“Yes.”
The criminal and civil cases separated.
Child endangerment allegations.
Professional misconduct for Mercer.
Financial investigation into Sloan and Mark.
Nothing wrapped neatly in one charge.
Nothing ended in one courtroom.
Real accountability was slower than viral stories.
Lily began seeing a new therapist chosen by Daniel, Grace, and an independent pediatric specialist together.
The first session lasted twenty minutes.
The therapist asked:
“What changed?”
Lily answered:
“Daddy came home.”
Daniel heard about it later and cried in his car.
She did not pretend not to see.
“You came home.”
“I should have been there.”
“Yes.”
She never lied to comfort him.
Then she added:
“And now you know being home is not the same as being present.”
Daniel changed his travel schedule.
But he stopped allowing work to become a permanent excuse.
Grace came from Oregon for two weeks.
Daniel apologized for believing distance had been Grace’s choice.

“Yes.”
Mark Ellison had agreed to cooperate against Sloan and Vanessa.
