Chapter 4 - The Custody Folder

Daniel had never discussed custody with Vanessa.

They were engaged.

Not married.

She had no legal claim to Lily.

That made the folder worse.

Inside were videos labeled:

FOOD INCIDENT.

EMOTIONAL OUTBURST.

AGGRESSION.

NONCOMPLIANCE.

Lily stood in the pantry doorway.

Vanessa held a cookie in front of her.

“Tell me you took it.”

“I didn’t.”

“If you admit it, you can have dinner.”

“I didn’t.”

Vanessa turned toward the hidden camera.

“See? She refuses accountability.”

“She was making evidence.”

Another clip showed Lily crying after school.

The file was labeled:

UNSTABLE AFTER ROUTINE TRANSITION.

The full camera angle showed Vanessa had just told her she could not visit her grandmother.

Another:

FOOD OBSESSION.

Lily opened the refrigerator after soccer practice.

The full clip showed she asked permission first.

Vanessa had cut the beginning.

“She edited my daughter into a case file.”

Maria whispered:

“Why?”

“Does Lily have an independent trust?”

“Yes.”

Lily’s mother, Hannah, had died four years earlier from an illness. Her life insurance, inherited shares, and family property were held in trust for Lily.

“How much?” Rachel asked.

“About six point four million.”

“I’m trustee until she turns twenty-five.”

“And if you die or become incapacitated?”

“My successor trustee is my sister.”

“After her?”

He opened the trust document on his computer.

Second successor:

A court-approved guardian of Lily’s person.

“Daniel, if Vanessa could become Lily’s guardian, she could petition for control over distributions.”

“No.”

“Not ownership. Control. Enough to matter.”

He remembered Vanessa asking strange questions months earlier.

What happens to Lily if something happens to you?

Does Hannah’s family still have any say?

He had thought she was trying to be responsible.

Rachel asked:

“Has Vanessa ever asked you to change your estate plan?”

Vanessa had brought him a “routine engagement update” from an attorney.

Maria whispered:

“What?”

Daniel looked at the empty folder.

“The document that would have put Vanessa into Lily’s guardianship chain is missing.”

Then his phone buzzed.

A bank alert.

Someone had just attempted to access Lily’s trust portal using Daniel’s password.
